Maiden castle, not a building but an earthwork which was a fortified British village, large enough to be called a town. It lies to the south of Dorchester on high ground.

Walter Tyndale's Maiden Castle, painted around 1905. Could be said to embody the bleakness of Hardy's Egdon heath, whose novels were new during Tyndale's life.
